Overview
Kendwa sits barely two kilometres south of Nungwi along Zanzibar's northwest coast, yet its character is noticeably different — wider, calmer, and a touch less frenetic. The beach is famous internationally for its monthly Full Moon party, hosted by Kendwa Rocks, but between those occasions it offers some of the most consistently good swimming and sunset-watching conditions on the island without Nungwi's midday crush.
The Beach and Swimming
Like Nungwi, Kendwa benefits from deep-water channels on both sides of the northern peninsula, meaning the sea remains swimmable at all tidal stages. The beach itself is broader here, with a longer uninterrupted stretch of powdery white sand that absorbs visitors more comfortably. Sunsets are spectacular — Kendwa faces almost due west, and the horizon is unobstructed, making it one of only a handful of Zanzibar beaches where the sun genuinely drops into the ocean rather than behind coastal vegetation.
The Full Moon Party and Nightlife
Kendwa Rocks pioneered the Full Moon beach party concept in Zanzibar, and the event remains the island's biggest recurring party. Expect fire dancers, multiple DJ stages on the sand, and crowds that swell to several hundred from Stone Town and resorts across the island. Outside full moon nights, evenings are mellow — sundowners at the Kendwa Rocks bar, barbecue buffets, and bonfires rather than club music.
Where to Stay and Eat
Kendwa Rocks is the anchor property and books up months ahead around full moons. La Gemma dell'Est (part of the Riu complex) and White Sands Luxury Villas offer more structured resort stays. For food, the guesthouses along the beach road serve fresh catch — barracuda, octopus, and lobster are common daily specials. Prices are slightly lower than Nungwi for equivalent quality.
Getting There
The nearest junction is just before Nungwi village. From Stone Town, take the same north road (about 65–70 minutes) and turn off at the signposted Kendwa track, a rough sand lane passable by 2WD in dry weather. Tuk-tuks run the short hop from Nungwi for around 5,000 TZS. Many visitors combine a day at Kendwa with an afternoon or evening in Nungwi.
