Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

A month-by-month guide to the best time to visit Zanzibar — when to find dry weather, calm seas, great diving, and the lowest prices.

When to go to Zanzibar

Zanzibar sits just south of the equator, so it is warm all year. What changes is rain, humidity, and how calm the Indian Ocean is. The island has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons, and picking the right window makes a real difference to beach days, diving visibility, and price.

The dry season (June to October)

This is the most popular time to visit, and for good reason. Days are sunny and warm rather than scorching, humidity drops, and the sea is calm and clear. It is the best stretch for diving and snorkelling around Mnemba Atoll, for long days on the beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa, and for wandering Stone Town without the heat becoming oppressive. Because it overlaps the European and North American summer holidays, prices are at their highest — book several months ahead.

The short dry season (December to February)

Between the two rainy seasons sits a hot, bright window that many travellers love. It is more humid than the mid-year season and noticeably warmer, but rain is usually brief. This is peak holiday season around Christmas and New Year, so the beaches are busy and the best hotels fill early.

The rainy seasons

The long rains run from mid-March into May, bringing heavy afternoon downpours, high humidity, and the lowest prices of the year — some hotels and dive centres close entirely. The short rains arrive in November with brief, scattered showers that rarely ruin a trip. If you are travelling on a budget and do not mind some cloud, the shoulder weeks on either side of the long rains can be excellent value.

Best time by activity

For diving and snorkelling, aim for the calm, clear water of June to October or February. For the lowest prices, target the long rains or the quiet weeks around them. For festivals, the Sauti za Busara music festival lights up Stone Town in February. Whatever the month, mornings are usually the calmest and brightest part of the Zanzibar day, so plan beach and boat trips early.

Month-by-month overview

January and February sit in the short dry season. It is hot and humid, but mostly sunny with warm seas. February in particular is excellent for diving around Mnemba Atoll, and the Sauti za Busara festival draws musicians from across Africa to the amphitheatre of the Old Fort in Stone Town.

March and April bring the long rains — the heaviest rainfall of the year. Expect daily downpours, often in the afternoons, with high humidity throughout. This is the quietest and cheapest period. Some resorts close, and dive centres may suspend operations during the worst weeks. If you must travel in this window, aim for early March before the rains establish themselves.

May sees the rains beginning to ease in the second half of the month. Prices remain low and the landscape is vibrantly green. It is a genuinely rewarding time for travellers who do not need reliable beach weather.

June, July, and August are the heart of the dry season and the most popular months of the year. Skies are reliably clear, humidity is comfortable, and the southeast trade winds keep temperatures pleasant. The trade winds do make the west coast beaches calmer than the east coast during this period — Nungwi and Kendwa are ideal, while Paje and Jambiani on the east coast can see stronger chop. Book flights and accommodation several months in advance.

September and October continue the dry weather, and the southeast winds ease as the season progresses. By October the atmosphere softens and the sea along the east coast recovers — a good time to kitesurf at Paje or explore the southeast without the full-peak prices of July and August.

November brings the short rains, or masika ndogo — lighter and more variable than the long rains. Showers tend to be brief and are often followed by sunshine. This shoulder season offers reasonable value and far fewer crowds than the peak summer months.

December is hot, bright, and festive. The short rains wind down by early December and the island fills with visitors for Christmas and New Year. Hotels along the north coast and in Stone Town charge peak prices and fill quickly.

Practical advice

Whatever month you travel, pack reef-safe sunscreen and a lightweight waterproof layer. A sarong or kanga is useful both at the beach and as a cover-up when entering mosques or local markets in Stone Town. Note that Ramadan affects restaurant hours and the availability of food and drink during daylight hours, so check the Islamic calendar when planning your trip.
