Overview
The Michamvi peninsula juts southward on Zanzibar's southeastern coast, separating Chwaka Bay from the open Indian Ocean. Its western, bay-facing shore — the villages of Michamvi Kae and Pingwe — delivers something genuinely rare on this side of the island: a sunset. Most east-coast beaches face open ocean and watch the sun rise, not set; Michamvi's geometry flips that, giving the bay side warm evening light across calm, sheltered water. It is also the neighbourhood where The Rock, perhaps Zanzibar's most photographed restaurant, stands on its coral outcrop in the shallows.
The Beach and Bay
The bay-facing beach is narrow in places and wider in others, with dark-green casuarina and mangrove backing giving it a greener, more lush feel than the stark white-and-blue of the north coast. Chwaka Bay is relatively shallow and calm — protected from open-ocean swell — making it safe and easy for children and non-confident swimmers. The water here is slightly warmer and more sheltered than east-facing beaches, and tidal variation, while present, does not drain the beach to the same extreme as Paje or Jambiani.
The Rock and Local Dining
The Rock restaurant is Michamvi's most famous landmark — a small circular building perched on a coral knoll that becomes an island at high tide and a rock-hopping destination at low. It serves fresh seafood and Swahili-influenced dishes with unobstructed bay views, and reservations via their website are essential (sometimes weeks in advance in peak season). Outside of The Rock, Michamvi and Pingwe have a handful of small guesthouses with their own kitchens serving local food at everyday prices.
Where to Stay
Michamvi Sunset Bay and Chwaka Bay Resort are the main properties on the western shore, both exploiting the bay and sunset views. Boutique and eco-lodge options include Essque Zalu Zanzibar to the north. The area is quieter than Paje, attracting couples and independent travellers who want easy access to Stone Town (about 45 minutes) with a non-resort atmosphere.
Getting There
From Stone Town, head east and south on the sealed road through Chwaka, then follow signs to Michamvi or Pingwe — the total journey is around 40–50 kilometres and takes 45–55 minutes by taxi ($20–30). The peninsula is not well served by public transport; a private transfer or rental car is practical. Many guests day-trip here from Paje (15 km north) specifically to visit The Rock.
