The Shortest Hop in Tanzania
The crossing between Dar es Salaam (DAR) and Zanzibar (ZNZ) is one of the most frequent and convenient short routes in all of East Africa. At just 70 km across the Zanzibar Channel, the flight lasts roughly 20 minutes — barely enough time for a safety demonstration. The ferry, meanwhile, offers a scenic two-hour crossing that deposits you directly at Stone Town's waterfront.
Flying DAR–ZNZ
Precision Air, Tanzania's main domestic carrier, operates multiple daily flights between Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) and Karume International (ZNZ). Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and ZanAir also run scheduled and charter services, with ZanAir in particular operating a high-frequency shuttle. Fares are modest by international standards, and booking a few days ahead is usually sufficient outside peak holiday periods. If you're transiting through DAR on an international flight, same-day connections to ZNZ are very achievable — DAR's terminal layout allows reasonable transfer times.
Taking the Ferry
The high-speed passenger ferries — operated by companies including Azam Marine and Kilimanjaro Fast Ferries — depart from the Dar es Salaam ferry terminal and arrive at Malindi Wharf in Stone Town. Crossings run multiple times daily, with morning departures being the most popular. The ride takes around two hours; seas can be choppy between March and May, so travellers prone to motion sickness may prefer to fly during that period. Luggage allowances on ferries are generous, making them ideal if you're carrying dive equipment or oversized bags.
Which to Choose
Fly if you value speed or are connecting from an international flight. Take the ferry if you want the experience, are arriving with heavy gear, or prefer to step straight into the bustle of Stone Town's waterfront without an airport transfer.
