Getting from New York to Zanzibar
No airline flies nonstop between the United States and Zanzibar — the Indian Ocean island is simply too remote from North American hubs to support such a route commercially. Every itinerary involves at least one and usually two aircraft changes, but the journey is well-trodden and the connections are reliable. Most travellers depart from JFK or Newark (EWR), with JFK offering the widest choice of carriers.
Gulf Hub Routings
Emirates operates a strong JFK–Dubai (DXB) service, and from DXB there are onward connections to Zanzibar. Qatar Airways links JFK to Doha (DOH) daily, with a relatively short hop to ZNZ completing the journey. Both airlines offer competitive fares in economy and premium cabins, and their Gulf hubs are designed for smooth transits. Total journey times via this routing typically fall in the 20–22 hour range including a 2–4 hour layover.
Via Addis Ababa
Ethiopian Airlines flies JFK–Addis Ababa (ADD) and operates an extensive East African network out of Bole Airport. The JFK–ADD leg itself takes around 15 hours; the Addis–Zanzibar connection adds roughly 3–4 hours. Ethiopian is worth considering for its strong business-class value and frequent promotional fares. Layovers in Addis tend to be efficient.
Via Europe
Travellers willing to add a European leg can connect through London (LHR), Amsterdam (AMS), or Istanbul (IST) before picking up a Gulf or East African carrier. This adds time but can sometimes unlock better fares or loyalty-program routing, particularly for frequent flyers using partner miles.
Practical Advice
Book early — US-to-Zanzibar itineraries involve multiple segments and prices rise sharply as departure dates approach. Confirm that your bags are checked all the way through to ZNZ before leaving JFK. An eVisa for Tanzania purchased before departure is strongly recommended to avoid queues on arrival.
