Location and setting
Tulia Zanzibar Unique Beach Resort is positioned on the northeast coast in the Pongwe area, between the reef-diving grounds of Matemwe to the north and the busier resort stretches of Kiwengwa to the south. Pongwe is one of the least developed and most scenic coves on the northeast coast: the beach curves gently around a sheltered bay, the reef provides enough protection to keep the water calm for much of the day, and the surrounding landscape retains a quiet, undisturbed quality that contrasts with the denser resort development elsewhere on the island.
The property makes the most of this setting. Its position on a cove rather than an open beach gives it a more enclosed, private feel than properties built on long straight stretches of sand.
Style and character
Tulia is a boutique property with an adults-only policy, which sets the tone for its atmosphere: quiet, unhurried, and oriented toward rest and relaxation rather than entertainment programming. The design draws on local materials and Swahili coastal influences, and the scale of the property keeps the guest count low enough that the resort rarely feels busy.
The overwater dining deck is among the most recognisable features of the property. Built out from the beach over the sea, it provides an unusual and scenic setting for meals, with the water visible below and the reef offshore in the middle distance. This kind of structure is uncommon among smaller Zanzibar boutique properties and gives Tulia a distinctive character.
Activities and surroundings
The northeast coast is well positioned for snorkelling and diving. Matemwe, a short drive to the north, is regarded as one of the best reef-diving areas on the island. Guided snorkelling trips along the reef in front of the resort are typically available, and boat excursions to the Mnemba Atoll marine conservation area can be arranged from this stretch of coast. Sea turtles are sighted regularly in the area.
Who it suits
Tulia is a strong match for couples seeking a genuinely peaceful retreat with a high level of natural beauty and some distinctiveness in its setting and facilities. The adults-only environment means it is quiet throughout the day, and the cove location provides a sense of seclusion that larger east-coast resorts cannot offer.
